The Weekend Warrior : Solid

Posted on September 05, 2007 @ 2:41 PM

Mid way through last week, surf forecasters around the world started talking up an 8m swell gunning for Margaret River. Even the Bureau of Meteorology was claiming it. This kind of forecast does not go unnoticed by our sports elite. Big wave hellman Ross Clarke-Jones, ex-world champ Tom Carroll, a host of local big wave lords and pro blowins mobilised for what was to be..."Sunday, 2 September, Day of Days”.

Some of the big wave crew hit up Cow Bombie on Saturday arvo and got some solid ones as a warm up. Conditions were less than ideal though, with a strong SW wind getting into it. Everyone was biding their time for Sunday…

The swell never hit the 8m mark but it was still HUGE. Every big wave reef on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste coast came to life, with massive walls of long-period, ocean-born energy detonating on the reefs.

The tow-in guys were getting some sick ones at The Bombie, fading and arcing across huge mountains of water…

The tow-in surfing on display at The Bombie was unreal but some of the most spectacular surfing of the day was done by the paddle in crew. I really respect the paddle guys because if things go wrong, they don’t have someone waiting on a ski ready to pull them out of trouble. They have to be extremely fit both mentally and physically to even consider heading out in such challenging conditions. Hats off to the paddlers.

However, it wasn’t all gnarly reef breaks and big wave bravado. There were some perfect beach-break peaks on offer too…

Hope you had a good weekend. Some more waves on the way this week - yeewww!
