Supertubes Surfing Foundation Launches Online Petition

The Supertubes Surfing Foundation has started an online petition, opposing the building of a nuclear power plant close to Jeffreys Bay.
Due to massive interest both in South Africa and internationally in the Foundation’s opposition to a 4000MW reactor that would spew heated and possibly polluted water back into the ocean, surfers from all over the world have signed the petition at the stall being manned at the Billabong Pro surf contest in Jeffreys Bay.
Legends like 1977 world surfing champion Shaun Tomson have stated their opposition to nuclear reactors being built so close to one of the top surfing waves in the world as have current world Mick Fanning and multiple world champ winner, Kelly Slater. Tomson said that he has seen many great breaks being destroyed over the years and Supertubes cannot go down that path. “Once a mistake has been made by changing the coastline, it cannot be fixed,” he said.
CANE (the Coalition against Nuclear Energy) have come out in full support of the Foundation’s stance and it also advocates that South Africa follows a policy that searches for renewable energy options for the country. All surfers are urged to visit the Supertubes Foundation website and fill in the petition. Let’s keep our oceans safe and clean for ourselves and the generations to come.
