Rap to Ritchie

Rat-a-tat-tat. I remember how you spoke like that and how you rode waves with a strange rhythm and grace. When you spoke it was of things that I don’t understand, but I
think they’re important just the same. And I been thinkin’ of you more and more often these days, like those times at work when your mind drifts away.

Surfing’s Not Green

The “green” Surfer’s Path and the Green Wave Awards are highly commendable, progressive initiatives, but don’t they gloss over one very important point? Surfing’s not “green”. By that I don’t mean the boards we ride, the clothes we wear or the paper our magazine is printed on. I mean surfing as a way of life. Ultimately no matter how many people start riding hemp surfboards and wearing organic wetsuits the “Elephant in the Corner” will always be there. Travel.

Take it Easy, Share the Waves

Visiting surfers beware! The friendly disposition of many an Irish surfer is no longer what it used to be. The traditional Irish greeting ‘céad míle fáilte’ (a hundred thousand welcomes) is evaporating like a soft sea mist at the Cliffs of Moher on a hot day. Travelling surfers, even those from different counties within Ireland, are now likely to be greeted in the line-up with raised eyebrows and conspiratorial whispers, or worse, the cold shoulder from
protective natives, particularly those who frequent some of the more remote and lesser-surfed locations.

Standing Down

Lying can be fun, even if you’re normally an upright citizen… I’ve called them lids, spongers, boogers, speed bumps, belly rubbers and a waste of three feet of foam. I’ve sprayed them with cutbacks, snaked ‘em, glared at and flat out ignored ‘em in the line-up. Their backward waddle into the ocean irked me; their lack of vertical progression confounded me.

I don’t know what has happened to our wonderful world of surfing. When I think back on our history, one thing stands out far above board design, movies, magazines, clothing companies – and that, dear reader, is individuality.
