<itunes:author>movies</itunes:author>

A multiple European and British Longboard Champion, Sam focuses primarily on exploration photo projects to remote coastlines. Recent groundbreaking trips have been to Mauritania, Haiti, Liberia, Kenya, Oman, the Maluku Islands, South Korea and China, to name a few places where Sam has been the first longboarder to be photographed riding waves.

Despite the traveling, Sam claims, "there is nothing more special in surfing than being a local. I love returning to West Cornwall – the vaulting granite cliffs, a skirt of quartz sand, and the anticipation of the changing season. This is where I grew up and live with my wife Sandy and baby daughter Lola. Home is where the heart is."

Directed and filmed by: Nick Welch.

This is an excellent, thoughtful examination of the state of surfing today, especially in relation to the surf industry and how it affects us, the surfers of the world. It manages to combine a range of opinions about the state of surfing in 2007, from the radical 'purist' views of some, like Dave Parmenter, to the corporate perspectives of some of the biggest names in the surf clothing industry, like Quiksilver's Bob McKnight and Billabong's Paul Naudé. There's never been a more honest and direct assessment of how big bucks might have affected our watery nirvana. Every surfer should watch it.

Nicholai Lidow has turned his article, "Sliding through Liberia" (TSP 52) into a film about this war-torn wave-rich country.

Here's what he says about it: "'Sliding Liberia' follows a group of young surfers to Liberia in search of more than perfect waves. As they travel through the West African country, devastated by decades of brutal civil war, they record the stories of people they meet along the way - people like Alfred, a young boy who became Liberia's first surfer after finding a bodyboard while fleeing from rebels. Besides rediscovering a world-class pointbreak that could be the best-kept secret in the surfing world, the surfers find something much more important – a way to travel responsibly in the 21st century."

Surfers: Dan Malloy, Chris Del Moro, Crystal Thornburg, Nicholai Lidow

2006: Two of surfing's greatest, though least known, chroniclers - surfing's "audiovisual poet laureats" – Greg Weaver and Spyder Wills dug through their garages and deep in the back of their closets to find these hitherto unseen 'lost reels'. Edited by Greg Schell (of Far Shore fame), this film follows the paths of two imagemakers whose careers were spent at the heart of surfing's establishment, and yet so often way out on the fringes of the known surfing world. From The Curl Line to Santosha to Dog Town to Wave Warriors III, these guys were in the water or on the sidelines filming era-defining moments with real professionalism and a true love of the ridiculous. A great film that tells their story, and a whole lot of ours.

Winner of Best Original Score award at X-Dance 2007

2002: Student filmmaker Greg Schell traces the journeys of surfing's two most famous pied pipers, Craig Peterson and Kevin Naughton. Throughout the 1970s these two travelled the world in search of new and unridden waves, and their regular reports in Surfer magazine inspired a whole generation to head off on their own wave-missions. This excellent film strings together their journeys using old Super-8 footage, still photos and enlightening, often hilarious interviews.

'Lost Jewel' looks at the destruction of surf spots on the island of Madeira, focusing on the magical big-wave pointbreak, Jardim do Mar, which has been severely damaged by an unnecessary seawall. The full-length film caused quite a stir when it premiered in Madeira and Portugal in 2006, and it goes on tour in the USA in summer 2007.
